Apartments in Madeira - not far from the Canary Islands
About 500 km north of the Canary Islands is the flower filled island of Madeira. In a similar fashion to the Canary Islands, Madeira is considered a winter escape destination. The climate is less warm than the Canaries because it is much further north but comparatively pleasant compared to the United Kingdom.
Madeira is Portuguese rather than Spanish and of volcanic origin like the Canary Islands. There are therefore black sands and volcanic rocks. Many of the visitors come to view the flowers, the striking bird of paradise flowers that are native and also to walk along the dry river and stream beds. It is another natural choice for a walking holiday to appreciate the countryside and it offers sufficient variety to keep exploring interesting.

Canary Islands or Madeira - a comparison
Both the Canary islands and Madeira are popular holiday destinations in the Atlantic Ocean. The Canary islands have a warmer climate during the cooler months and are more reliable for better weather during late autumn and February and March. Winter temperatures in Madeira generally do not fall below 13 degrees from December through to March, the Canary Islands are just that degree or two warmer.
Summer in both is pleasant and although average temperatures are rarely over 30 degrees, there are occasions in La Gomera in the Canaries when they can reach 40 degrees.
The best beaches are said to be in Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands. The southern eastern tip of Fuerteventura also offers magnificent golden sandy beaches.
The character of these holiday islands
Each of the Canary Islands has its own particular character and charm. All of the islands are developed in varying levels for tourism. Most of the apartments and holiday accommodation in Madeira is around the capital Funchal. Many of the apartments are timeshares maintained by management agencies.
The apartments and resorts in the Canaries are in numerous, mainly coastal regions. There is a wider choice of accommodation in the Canary Islands, thousands of apartments in resorts but also private apartments and villas.
The choice of eateries and entertainment in the Canary Islands is better developed than in Madeira. The best reason to visit Madeira is to see the flowers, parks and impressively lengthy underground road network.
